21 SPITSBERGEN One of the things I wanted to get across to the people who came to my talks was that photography wasn’t all about fancy, expensive and professional gear but it was about having a creative eye for an image www.fredolsencruises.com a setting – but never fully set – sun. The cold blues of sky and cloud merged with the warm reds of the sun as it neared but didn’t breach the horizon. Our first port of call beyond this definitive line was Tromsø, where we headed for the Arctic Cathedral, the Polaria Aquarium and the fascinating Polstjerna (The Polar Star), the best preserved sealing vessel in Norway. Our northernmost mainland stop was Honningsvåg, where I joined other guests as we headed out to a seabird colony. I never fail to be charmed by seeing Gannets, Puffins, Guillemots and other seabirds although I see them almost every week throughout summer in the course of my work. What I did hope to photograph were White Tailed Sea Eagles – and I wasn’t disappointed. Norway has over 3,200 pairs, with over 100 pairs on Magerøy Island, where Honningsvåg is situated, and a dozen pairs on the tiny seabird island. Soon the eagles
