Closer Magazine Winter 2013-14

www.fredolsencruises.com 3 Welcome It seems like yesterday that I was enjoying spending time in Asia while aboard Balmoral’s World Cruise and yet here we are as both Balmoral and Black Watch are about to embark on two separate and amazing World Cruises. If you’ve never sampled part of a World Cruise then I would definitely recommend taking a look at the India & Arabia feature on page 14 – this has to be one of my favourite parts of the world. What better way to explore it than from a base that you can call home and an oasis of comfort after the excitement and energy to be found on land in Asia. That base is of course the Black Watch. I guess that’s the beauty of cruising. We may all have a favourite hotel that we’ve stayed in and we love but you have to keep going back to the same place to experience it. With Fred. you can take your favourite hotel with you. Not only that but you know you’ll never feel out of place, everything’s in English and you know the prices. Our European City Stay programme is a new way to explore and discover Europe’s favourite cities without having to pay the expense of flights, hotels and taxis as well as expensive food and drink bills – especially in places like Scandinavia where even a coffee can cost more than £5. If you’ve wanted to spend more time exploring a city and seeing it at night then these cruises are for you. Recently I was on one of our cruises which included an overnight stay in Stockholm and how amazing it was to see the old town at night. So many cities come alive and look so vibrant after the sun sets. Hamburg, Amsterdam and Paris are just three (in fact you can see all these great cities in just one holiday – Bright Lights and Overnights). See page 42 for all the fantastic destinations you can visit on our City Stay cruises. You may have read recently that some mega ships may be banned from Venice. Fortunately, Fred.’s smaller ships can still sail right into the heart of ‘La Serenissima’ – a very special experience as people wave to the ship as you sail in. You can read more about Venice on page 16. Finally, may I take the opportunity to say I hope you had a very enjoyable Christmas and to wish you a very Happy New Year.
